Mobile Genetic Elements

Mobile genetic elements (MGE) are a type of DNA that can move around within or between genomes. Some of these elements code for their own proteins that will copy or move the segment of DNA, while others depend on proteins produced elsewhere in the cell that move the DNA.

MGE include: Transposons, Retrotransposons, Insertion sequences, Conjugative and Integrative Elements (ICE's), Plasmids, Bacteriophage elements, Group II intronsw

The total of all mobile genetic elements in a genome, or a metagenome, may be referred to as the mobilome. - modified from wikipedia
