Resistance, whether it be antibiotic, UV, heavy metals, or something as of yet undiscovered, is the ability of a bacteria to live in an environment that is typically hostile.

Resistances to these various compounds and conditions is interesting to microbiologists in part because some of these traits are passed among different species through horizontal gene transfer (HGT). Understanding the mechanisms and selective pressures is interesting in an academic sense, but also in a practical sense as some of these pressures we try to use to our advantage by killing pathogenic bacterial species.
